It’s not always rosey reviews for the Roses as these 2 demonstrate. Record Mirror misses the point in 1988 and the Melody Maker get stuck in back in 1995. Not sure if the Melody Maker’s contempt is solely directed at the Silvertone cash in or at the music too.
Time to lighten up with what I think is a Smash Hits fluff piece about the Roses – or is it “the new Johnny Hates Jazz!”.
I just love the early press adds for the Silvertone singles. They really captured the Roses vibe and instantly set them apart from their contemporaries. Here’s a half page one for Elephant Stone. Wish I could fit those full page ones I’ve got onto the scanner!
